Getting Around Florence
Useful Services for Tourists
A practical guide with everything you need to know for traveling on the T1 (Villa Costanza – Florence – Careggi) and T2 (Florence – Peretola Airport) trams, which are being extended to Piazza San Marco.
The T1 tram line connects the terminal at Villa Costanza (in the municipality of Scandicci) to Careggi Hospital, passing through the Santa Maria Novella train station, Florence’s main station, with extended service hours during the weekend.
The T2 tram line in Florence connects the Santa Maria Novella station (from the terminal at Piazza dell’Unità) to the Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Peretola, with 12 stops and a travel time of about 22 minutes between the two terminals.
The only interconnection stop between Line 2 and Line 1 is currently “Alamanni Stazione,” located in front of the side exit of the Santa Maria Novella train station (on Via Alamanni): to switch between T2 and T1, you need to get off here and—depending on your desired direction—wait on the same platform or cross over.
Florence Tram, Weekday and Holiday Timetables (including Night Service on Weekends)
The Florence tram operates continuously from 5 AM until 12:30 AM, both in winter and summer. The tram runs every day, from Monday to Sunday, including holidays, with varying schedules and frequencies depending on the time of day, providing an average of one ride every 4-5 minutes at stops (5-6 minutes during the school holiday period in summer).
The tram operates on all holidays (including Easter, Easter Monday, Ferragosto, Christmas, St. Stephen’s Day, and New Year’s Day), although the hours may be reduced. Additionally, there is a night service on weekends, with rides until 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays and a frequency of about 16-18 minutes after 12:30 AM.
Tickets (including SMS and app)
To board the Florence tram, you must have a valid ticket from Autolinee Toscane: the ticket is the same for both the tram and public transport on urban buses in the regional provincial capitals.
Tickets can be purchased directly at Florence tram stops, as each stop is equipped with an automatic ticket machine, accepting both credit cards and cash. They can also be bought at retailers (bars, newsstands, tobacco shops, supermarkets). Another option is the SMS ticket for the tram and buses. You can also purchase tickets via the Autolinee Toscane app (same rates as paper tickets) or onboard the tram by tapping your card or debit card on the designated reader.
The Best Parking for Accessing the Tram
For the T1 line, there is the Villa Costanza parking lot, located right at the tram terminal and directly connected to the A1 Milan – Naples highway. Some free parking spots are also available along the main roads near the Villa Costanza terminal, but they are often crowded. Alternatively, you can use the free parking in front of the Coop at Ponte a Greve, just a short walk from the “Nenni – Torregalli” T1 stop, and across the street (near the hospital access road) is the new park-and-ride lot, which is also free.
Along the T2 line, there is the park-and-ride lot on Viale Guidoni, not far from the A11 highway exit and the airport, or the parking under the San Donato shopping center in Novoli, both of which are paid parking.
