Montespertoli, the largest producer of Chianti DOCG in the world

Montespertoli is one of the Tuscan municipalities with the highest amount of vineyards and is the largest producer of Chianti DOCG in the world. Its history has always been linked to viticulture and wine production. Over the years this aspect has strenghtened and it gave life to numerous and well-known wineries, whose wines are exported in many countries around the world. This area is naturally tied to native grape varieties, among which Sangiovese plays the main role, alongside other red and white grape varieties, such as Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Toscana and Trebbiano. International grape varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay and many others are also common.

Montespertoli and the wine denominations

The municipal territory falls entirely within the Chianti area and hosts two main sub-areas: Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG and Chianti Montespertoli DOCG. IGT wines, Vinsanto of Chianti DOCG and Vinsanto of Chianti Montespertoli DOCG are also produced.
The wines produced in the municipal area have the peculiarity of being fresh and ready to drink, but depending on the vineyard distinctive traits, the soil, the microclimate, and the attention paid to the winemaking process, they can also be wines intended for aging. . Riserva DOCG is an aged version produced for Chianti, Chianti Montespertoli and Colli Fiorentini.
The vast hilly territory and the uneven soil enriche the diversity of the wines that are produced. It is also common to find vineyards on soils rich in fossils, which make them even more peculiar.

Associations and events

Montespertoli is part of the movement Wine Cities and hosts the association Strada del Vino Chianti of Montespertoli.

Summer in the cellar

“Estate in Cantina” is a kiosk in Piazza del Popolo, Montespertoli’s main square, where local wines can be drank by the glass. An event for those who do not want to move to the countryside.
