Parish church of San Piero in Mercato

The Pieve constitutes the original nucleus of the town of Montespertoli

The parish church, consecrated in 1057 and probably built before the year 1000, is one of the oldest in the whole Valdelsa and, together with the nearby village of Lucardo, constitutes the original nucleus of the city of Montespertoli.

At the head of a plover that included as many as 26 churches and home to a thriving municipal market – to which the origin of the name is due -, this church represented the center of religious and social life and economic activities in Montespertoli throughout the Middle Ages. losing its functions only at the end of the fifteenth century.
Today, despite the heavily restored facade at the beginning of the twentieth century with a fake white and green marble decoration, traces of its original forms remain in the imposing bell tower and in the sober interior spaces divided into three naves by two rows of pillars and arches, where the splendid baptismal font in inlaid marble dating back to the XII-XIII century is still preserved.

Don’t miss the neighbor Sacred Art Museum which collects precious works of art from both the Pieve di San Piero and other churches in the area.
