The story of a forgotten hero, Marshal Carmelo Gorgone

On the occasion of the commemoration of Remembrance Day, the City of Montespertoli invites citizens to a conference entitled “A forgotten hero. The story of Marshal Carmelo Gorgone“. The event will take place on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024 at 6 p.m. at the“Mauro Marconcini” Auditorium of the “i Lecci” Vine and Wine Culture Center at 73 Lucardese Street.

The conference, which is part of the larger “The Montespertoli that saved the Jews“, started in 2021 to rediscover the Jewish presence in Montespertoli during the Holocaust, will thus focus on the fundamental role played by the then commander of the Montespertoli Carabinieri in the network of protection of the Jews present in the territory at the time, with the generous approval of the marshal’s own family.

Speakers during the conference, in addition to the Mayor of Montespertoli, Cavaliere Gabriele Boccaccini (Professor of Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins at the University of Michigan and principal architect of the project), Professor Marta Baiardi (Historical Institute of the Resistance in Tuscany), a representative of theCarabinieri Corps and a representative of the Jewish Community of Florence.

It should also be noted that there is apermanent installation of thematic panels on the Shoah by Yad Vashem, the National Holocaust Remembrance Board in Jerusalem, Israel, at “Le Corti” Cultural Center on Via Sonnino 1.
